First step is to understand the differences in saltwater access.
You have bridges, lifts Locks and weirs. Sailboat access is unrestricted with no lifts, Bridges, Locks and weirs "restrictions" to the Gulf of Mexico.
A Boat Lock allows a boater to leave their boat in the water while changing to different water levels. The main and largest Boat Lock is located in Southwest Cape Coral at Cape Harbour - the Chiquita Lock.
The Chiquita Lock is manned during specific hours and is large enough to accommodate very large boats. The Chiquita Lock is in place for environmental reasons - primarily to protect the Mangroves and Estuary in Southwest Cape Coral.
With a Boat Lift, a mechanical arm actually picks up the boat, lifts it out of the water and swings it over a Dam or Weir to the other side. Lifts are primarily unmanned and residents needing to use the lift are given a key to operate the lift.
A Weir is a concrete barrier that separates freshwater from saltwater. The Weir will usually allow the higher level freshwater to flow into the saltwater, but will not allow the saltwater to back flow into the freshwater. Boats cannot travel between freshwater and saltwater without a lift.
